Western Cape
The Western Cape and the Garden Route has a Mediterranean Maritime climate, with moderately hot summers, and mild winters. Any time of the year is good for visiting the area, depending if you enjoy a peaceful retreat during the winter months, or a bustling holiday resort during the summer. The Western Cape is situated on the south-western tip of the African continent. It is a region of folded mountains, well-watered valleys, wide beaches, and breathtaking scenery. The cold Atlantic Ocean along the west coast is a rich fishing area, while the warmer Indian Ocean skirts its southern beaches. The wines from grapes grown in the Cape are famed throughout the world. Visitors to the Western Cape can disembark at Cape Town International Airport, George Airport or at the Port of Cape Town in the shadow of Table Mountain. Alternatively fly to Port Elizabeth and drive along to Cape Town (765 km). A network of roads leads to and from Cape Town, the capital of this province. The Western Cape boasts one of the six accepted floral kingdoms of the world. Although the smallest in area of them all, the Western Cape Floral Kingdom, locally called fynbos, contains more plant species than the whole of Europe. This is also the home of the world-famous protea and heather.
